Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Cathedral: An architectural gem and Chicago landmark, Holy Trinity was designed by architect Louis Sullivan and constructed with funds from Czar Nicholas II to serve Chicago’s Russian Orthodox community. It is currently a place of worship for 185 parish families of Orthodox and non-Orthodox Christians. Roofing problems and deferred maintenance have damaged much of the decorative sheet metal ornamentation on the exterior.
Historical significance of Holy Trinity Cathedral: Holy Trinity is one of the only intact Louis Sullivan-designed churches in the world, and one of a small number of the architect’s buildings surviving in Chicago. The Cathedral was constructed in 1903 by St. John of Chicago and served primarily families of Russian ancestry. [excerpted from Partners in Preservation website]
Results from the Partners in Preservation program: Thanks to your diligence and hard work, not to mention effective usage of the time-honored Chicago tradition of voting early and often, Holy Trinity Cathedral finished in the top ten out of more than 150 original entries. As a result, Holy Trinity was awarded a $75,000 grant to help begin the restoration of the decorative sheet metal ornamentation. Click here for an article written by Fr.
